Lobbying Rules for Nonprofits Workshop

Nonprofits can and should advocate and lobby for policy change! It is legally permissible for 501(c)(3) public charities to lobby as long as they remain within their annual lobbying limits under federal tax law. Some, but not all, of an organization’s activities to influence federal, state and local policies will be considered lobbying, so it is important for organizations to learn how to distinguish between lobbying and non-lobbying activities. This workshop will explain federal tax laws governing 501(c)(3) lobbying activity, including how to calculate a public charity’s annual lobbying limits, and what activities will qualify as lobbying.

About: Alliance for Justice is a national association of over 100 organizations, representing a broad array of groups committed to progressive values and the creation of an equitable, just, and free society. AFJ is the leading expert on the legal framework for nonprofit advocacy efforts, providing definitive information, resources, and technical assistance that encourages organizations and their funding partners to fully exercise their right to be active participants in the democratic process.

About: Daren Garshelis is Counsel in the Alliance for Justice West Coast office. He works on AFJ’s Nonprofit Advocacy Project, assisting nonprofit organizations in expanding their capacity to influence public policy by presenting workshops and providing individualized consultations in English and Spanish regarding legal rules of nonprofit advocacy. Daren primarily services nonprofit organizations promoting civil, immigrant, labor and LGBT rights, health care, education, and environmental protection.
