The (Honest) Truth About Dishonesty: lunch and book signing with Dan Ariely
Tuesday, June 12, 2012 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM (PDT)
Palo Alto, United States
Hosted by Institute for the Future
Please join us on Tuesday, June 12, at 12 noon for lunch and a book signing with Dan Ariely.
Dan Ariely, the New York Times bestselling author of The Upside of Irrationality and Predictably Irrational, examines the contradictory forces that drive us to cheat and keep us honest, in this groundbreaking look at the way we behave: The (Honest) Truth About Dishonesty. From ticket-fixing in our police departments to test-score scandals in our schools, from our elected leaders’ extra-marital affairs to the Ponzi schemes undermining our economy, cheating and dishonesty are ubiquitous parts of our national news cycle—and inescapable parts of the human condition. Drawing on original experiments and research, in the vein of Freakonomics, The Tipping Point, and Survival of the Sickest, Ariely reveals—honestly—what motivates these irrational, but entirely human, behaviors.
Dan's writings have been incredible inspirations to IFTF over the years, and we're honored to be hosting him at our office. Dan will speak about his new book, The (Honest) Truth About Dishonesty, a discussion and book signing will follow.
Despite our intentions, why do we so often fail to act in our own best interest? Why do we promise to skip the chocolate cake only to find ourselves drooling our way into temptation when the dessert tray rolls around? Why do we overvalue things that we’ve worked to put together? What are the forces that influence our behavior?
Dan Ariely, James B. Duke Professor of Psychology & Behavioral Economics at Duke University is dedicated to answering these questions and others in order to help people like more sensible—if not rational—lives. His interests span a wide range of behaviors and his sometimes-experiments are consistently interesting, amusing and informative, demonstrating profound ideas that fly in the face of common wisdom.
In addition to appointments at the Fuqua School of Business, the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, the Department of Economics, and the School of Medicine as Duke University, Dan is also a founding member of the Center for Advanced Hindsight, and the author of the New York Times bestsellers Predictably Irrational, and The Upside of Irrationality. His new book, The Honest Truth About Dishonesty will be out on June 5th, 2012.
