"What are pounds of toxic flame-retardants doing in my furniture?"
Featuring Michael Green, Executive Director, Center for Environmental Health and Robin Guenther, Principal, Perkins + Will
Today's industries use over 80,000 chemicals, and they create thousands more each year. Before using new chemical concoctions and releasing them into the world, companies are not required to prove that the chemicals are safe. It's true: Industries create new chemicals. They use them. Then we all wait to find out if these chemicals make us sick. Many people have heard of Bisphenol A, or BPA, because of its hormone-like properties and its link to a myriad of diseases like cancer and reproductive disorders. Seemingly overnight baby bottles, sippy cups, and hiker's nalgene bottles were labeled BPA-free. But what are companies replacing it with?
A recent study showed that many "BPA-Free" products have the same hormone-mimicking properties that they had when made with BPA. In other words, it appears that industry has simply replaced BPA with other unregulated chemicals that may have the same harmful impacts on our children's health. This is a toxic shell game that impacts millions of families, a game of chemical sleight-of-hand that puts our children and families at risk from thousands of potentially hazardous and almost completely unregulated substances.
BPA is only one example of this toxic shell game. Come find out where else people are playing the toxic shell game and how you can avoid it.
