Doug is a community constructor, experience engineer and tuxedo traveler. He co-founded Mindshare LA in 2006 as well as the interactive collective Syyn Labs in 2009. He likes volunteering at an organic farm and wearing tuxedos for charitable escapades.

Lets PLAY! The Education Revolution

A revolutionary change in education is needed to transform teaching and educational game technology. The talk will examine embedding academic content and assessment into interactive, digital games and simulations, and how to effectively merge academic standards with high quality entertainment.  The talk will discuss games and programs developed to ignite these changes and of a new school designed by GameDesk to launch in 2012 that ignores almost every standard mode of instruction within the traditional school model.

Having designed and produced over a dozen educational games for industry and education, Lucien Vattel is at the forefront of developing how games can be used for core curriculum education. A prolific researcher, game-maker, filmmaker, and school designer, Mr. Vattel stands at the crossroads of where education and technology converge. He was co-founder and co-architect of the University Of Southern California’s Undergraduate and Master's CS Program in Game Development where he also served as Associate Director for Games Research and faculty lecturer.  He currently owns and operates Chizuru Games, an educational game company, and serves as CEO of GameDesk, a nonprofit organization whose role is to reshape modes of learning and engagement through game-play and game development.

"Too High, Too Fast, Too Fun: How America Destroyed The Epic Playgrounds--and How We Can Build Them Back Up" follows the evolution of playgrounds from the sandboxes in the tenements, to the standard 1940s swings and teeter totters to the glory days of the adventure playgrounds and giant rocketship slides---before the country knocked them all down. This talk at MindshareLA is the kick off of the Epic Playground Project, which will extend to artists creating their own versions of fantastical playgrounds, and eventually getting them built across the country.

A brawling writer and editor in his 20s, Bill Jensen is now a digital media executive with a proven track record of audience and revenue growth, as well as a creative storyteller who has worked in the toy, animation and entertainment industries.

A trend in entertainment has been to increase the immersion of the user in a given story or environment.  The falling prices of sensors and hardware paired with ubiquitous mobile devices paves the way for a truly entertaining future.

Brent is an engineer and an entrepreneur building companies focused on games and entertainment.  He's a cofounder of Syyn Labs, a creative collective that combines art and engineering to create high engagement for large brands.  He's also a cofounder of Anti-Aging Games, a casual games website for reducing the risk of early memory loss.  In his spare time he likes building interactive art, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, artistic graffiti and inspiring kids via programs such as Spark and NFTE.
