Honey Harvest at City Center

Sunday, July 15
10am - 3pm
with Alan Hawkins and Marcia Lieberman

City Center Roof and Dining Room

We reflect on the effort that brought us this food and we consider how it comes to us. - Meal Verse

Honeybees must visit approximately two million blooms to make one pound of honey. We will celebrate the generosity of honeybees and learn about honey by harvesting the honey from our rooftop hives. Our beekeepers will show us how to take the honey combs off the hives and we will crush, filter, and bottle the honey. We will visit the gardens at City Center, learn how bees make honey, learn about honey lore and history, read poetry about honey and bees, swap honey recipes, and taste several varieties of honey. Each participant will go home with a small jar of City Center honey. Please bring a bag lunch. Wear light colored clothes. If you have a bee veil and gloves please bring them with you. A small number of veils will be provided.

San Francisco Zen Center (SFZC)

Established in 1962 by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi and his American students, San Francisco Zen Center is a Soto Zen Buddhist community with three practice places in the SF Bay Area: City Center, an urban temple in the heart of San Francisco; Green Gulch Farm, in Marin County, where fertile fields meet the ocean; and Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, the first Zen training monastery in the West, in the Ventana Wilderness inland from Big Sur. At San Francisco Zen Center, zazen, study, and work practice are available to a diverse population of students, visitors, lay people, priests, and monks. All are welcome!
