Hike our trails under towering cedars and climb our Canopy Tower to get a view of Mt. Rainier. Pack a picnic and lunch in one of our cozy treehouses, or spread a blanket alongside Mac’s pond and turn your eyes to the skies for violet-green swallows in their aerial pursuits of insect prey!

IslandWood's trail systems will be open this day only for your self-guided exploration.  Pack a lunch and enjoy a picnic, just remember to Leave No Trace.  We'll have trail maps for you so you can find your way around. Spend the day and enjoy our woodland trails as you set your own pace for exploration, discovery and yes, even solitude in our woods.

Journey leisurely down the Spine Trail and traverse the ravine on a suspension bridge. Climb our Canopy Tower to get a birds-eye view of the land – we’ll have friendly docents to guide you at this structure. Meander through hemlock and red-cedar woods and make your way towards Mac's Pond to scout for ospreys and eagles. Head up the Cemetery Trail and peek in the Mill Worker's Cabin or head south to explore the more elusive "Lower Loop Trail" full of mossy wonders, maidenhair ferns, and hooty owls. Heading back to campus, take the Spine Trail north and weave around the cattail marsh, stopping at the Bird Blind to observe waterfowl and other wildlife. Both treehouses will be open for your visit, too!

We'll have maps for you so you can find your way around and will be happy to suggest a route that is suitable for your family and abilities.
