Event Details

NYU Steinhardt's Commission on Gender, Race, and Social Justice Speaker Series is proud to host a conversation with Dr. Aron Janssen, M.D.

Dr. Janssen will be discussing issues around gender, sexual identity, and youth, posing the following question:

In a society that approaches gender from a binary perspective, what happens to the kids that don’t fit neatly into a box?

In this talk, Dr. Janssen will explore how asking that question led to the creation of a novel service for LGBTQ youth.

Aron Janssen, M.D., the director of the NYU Gender and Sexuality Service is a child and adolescent psychiatrist with interest in LGBTQ health and specifically in the assessment of gender variance in children and adolescents.  Additionally, Dr. Jassen is a Clinical Instructor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and an Attending Physician at the NYU Child Study CenterPrior to joining the CSC, he completed his general psychiatry residency at NYU/Bellevue. While in training, he founded the LGBT mental health clinic at Bellevue Hospital and continues to oversee its operation.

Dr. Janssen is a member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, American Psychiatric Association, and World Professional Association for Transgender Health. In addition, Dr. Janssen has presented on GLBT issues in medicine at Regional and National Conferences for the American Association of Medical Colleges and had his research presented at the 2007 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections.
