Description:
This panel will consider recent research by the Health Systems 20/20 project in Uganda and Malawi examining drivers of intrinsic motivation for nationally representative samples of health workers across cadres and sectors. Results show that the most significant drivers of intrinsic motivation are not financial and contrary to previous research on the role of financial rewards on motivation, an increase in the self-reported adequacy of compensation leads to a decrease in motivation among Malawian health workers. In addition, the panel will consider the relationship between intrinsic motivation and health outcomes by examining how interventions to improve the motivation of health workers in the Dominican Republic led to an increase in maternal health outcomes.
