Event Details

The Good Food Day of Service on Cesar Chavez Day concludes with a Festival and Closing Panel at Metabolic Studio under the Spring Street Bridge, adjacent to the Los Angeles State Historic Park near Chinatown.

 

The festivities will feature a resource fair, food trucks, chef demonstrations, live music and a riveting panel discussion on the question of Fair Food.

 

Good Food Day LA Festival Activities:

 

9:00 AM - A Native American Honoring Ceremony with the Tongva will open the festivities in the Anabolic Monument in the Los Angeles State Historic Park. Following the ceremony, learn about the edible, medicinal, and cultural uses of Southern California native plants and help with soil care and plantings.

 

11:00 AM - Check out the resource fair, vendors and live music and live streaming from the various service projects throughout the city!

 

12:00 PM - At noon, enjoy a cooking contest of "the people's food:" Cabbage! From Kim Chee to Cole Slaw will be judged by Pulitzer Prize winning food critic Jonathan Gold along with well-known chefs and other cabbage-loving eaters!

 

1:00 PM - Following the cooking contest, join a panel discussion about the fight for Fair Food.

 

Panel Discussion: "From the Local to the Global: Will Food Ever be Fair?"

From field workers to small farms across the globe, the movement for Fair Food seeks equal access to healthy food and just treatment for the workers who produce and deliver food to our tables.  This Cesar Chavez Day, join the Los Angeles Food Policy Council for a panel discussion about how our food choices can help create a global Fair Food system.

This event is wheelchair accessible. The site is walking distance from the Chinatown Gold Line stop (heading north on Alameda, veer left onto Baker St.). Public transit and biking is encouraged! Parking is available across the street at the Los Angeles State Historic Park.

 

About Good Food Day-LA

 

The Mayor’s volunteer and service campaign, “We Serve LA,” is partnering with the Los Angeles Food Policy Council to present the citywide day of service:  Good Food Day-LA!  Good Food Day-LA will be dedicated to learning about, celebrating and volunteering to strengthen our local food system.The event is produced and presented by The Office of Mayor Villaraigosa and The Los Angeles Food Policy Council (www.goodfoodla.org).  Good Food Partners are Oxfam, The California Endowment, and United Farm Workers.
