Inquiry Circles:  Small Group Projects that Actually Work

Instructor:  Lynette Frenette, Education Consultant

Grade Levels:   6 – 12                        Credits: 1, 2 or 3

Searching for teaching strategies that truly engage and motivate students?  Investigate inquiry circles—small groups of students working together to explore and study a topic or text of interest.  Working within (and beyond) your content standards, literature circles can allow adolescent learners to question, build knowledge, and care about critical content and the world around them. Time will be spent discussing topics such as motivating students through choice and social learning, productive group work and collaboration, the role of critical thinking strategies in inquiry learning, and processing the structures behind various models of inquiry circles.

Required Text:  Comprehension and Collaboration: Inquiry Circles in Action, Stephanie Harvey and Harvey Daniels (Heinemann, 2009), ISBN 9780325012308
