Cultivating the Body and Breath of Zazen: A Zen and Yoga Retreat
1 - 4 pm
With Mako Voelkel and Jody Greene
City Center Buddha Hall
Settling into an upright balanced sitting position with the breath flowing deeply and easefully is a wonderful foundation for the open awareness of seated meditation. In this workshop we'll explore the yoga postures and breath practices that help to create the flexibility and strength that sustain zazen. This will include both holding postures that open the hips, back, and shoulders and the practice of Vinyasa (flow) yoga routines that awaken both body and breath. We will also consider techniques that aid in working with specific physical limitations and/or injuries.
This workshop assumes no prior experience with the practice of yoga, and is designed for all students of zazen.
This afternoon workshop will include guided yoga practice, seated Zen meditation and instruction, guided breathing practices, a Dharma talk, and some time for sharing.

San Francisco Zen Center (SFZC)
Established in 1962 by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi and his American students, San Francisco Zen Center is a Soto Zen Buddhist community with three practice places in the SF Bay Area: City Center, an urban temple in the heart of San Francisco; Green Gulch Farm, in Marin County, where fertile fields meet the ocean; and Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, the first Zen training monastery in the West, in the Ventana Wilderness inland from Big Sur. At San Francisco Zen Center, zazen, study, and work practice are available to a diverse population of students, visitors, lay people, priests, and monks. All are welcome!
