What is American Belly Dance? The term “la danse du ventre” or “belly dance” was coined by the French author and traveler, Gustav Flaubert in 1849 in a letter to his mother in which he describes the mysterious, graceful, joyous, soulful, and ever fascinating dances of Egypt. American belly dance encompasses a Mediterranean cornucopia of folk and professional dance styles from Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey and Greece, done with an American flair for presentation and style. Precise hipwork and fluid body movements are emphasized in this beautiful and lyrical art form. What do I gain from learning to Belly Dance? You will experience the beauty, grace and mystery of this ancient dance firsthand! Learn rhythmic shimmies, isolations, and fluid snake-like movements while enjoying music from the Middle East, Turkey and North Africa. Belly dancing can improve your posture, flexibility, and body awareness, plus it’s a great workout for the waist, hips, and thighs. Many also find relief from stress and lower back pain. Belly dancing enhances self confidence and helps students love their bodies as they are. This is truly a dance for every body, large or small. Best of all, it’s FUN! What is the PiperMethod of American Belly Dance? The PiperMethod of American Belly Dance emphasizes precision movement, fluidity, grace, and dynamic presentation. Piper developed this technique-based instruction method to teach students the poise and physical control necessary to turn movement into dance. Choreographies are utilized to help dancers learn smooth transitions and music interpretation. There is also an optional certification program designed to assess each dancer’s strengths and opportunities for growth and improvement.
