Belinda Lambert, Env. Prog. Mgr., Stormwater Maintenance,  Pinellas County Dept. of Environment & Infrastructure, Transportation & Stormwater Division

Lyme Disease is the fastest growing vector-borne disease in the United States, and reports of its incidence in Florida are rising as well.  Applicators in the field environment have a high risk of exposure, as the ticks that carry the disease are prominent in a variety of habitats.  They can be found in maintained lawns as well as in the overgrown brushy areas frequently associated with Rights of Way, pond margins and Natural Areas.  By being aware of the tick’s biology, recommended preventative measures, disease symptoms and pitfalls of diagnosis, the applicator can decrease the odds of being infected, and improve the chances of a prompt diagnosis and successful treatment if infection does occur.
