JOIN US FOR A FUN-FILLED WEEKEND OF SHOWS AND SHOPPING, WORKSHOPS AND SEMINARS, WITH TOPICS RANGING FROM TRADITIONAL TO CABARET, ISTANBUL TO CAIRO, COMBOS AND CHOREOGRAPHY TO IMPROVISATION, HISTORIC TO COMTEMPORARY

9am Rhea All Levels
Introduction to Cymbals + Karsilama: learn Rhea’s exciting Greco-Turkish style from the roots up. Start with cymbals and then Karsilama technique, finishing with a fun choreography in pairs, circles and lines (with or without zills).
10am Rhea All Levels
3d Chakra Power + Ancient Greek Dance: Find your center, the middle, the origin, and then blossom in every direction wit twists, turns and special walks with hand gestures.
11am Rhea Int./Adv.
Standing and Walking Shimmies. Nicknamed “Quicksilver” by Leea Aziz, Rhea is known for the fastest hips in the West! She will teach you how to move in every way imaginable. Maximize every step you take.
11am Melina Int./Adv.
Floorwork Technique: lyric, sinuous, and graceful in appearance, floorwork is difficult, and without proper technique, potentially dangerous. You need to be in very good shape for this class! Bring your own knee pads or floor mat.
Noon Piper All Levels
Watch the 2004 Belly Dance Magic Show! Piper will be on hand to discuss choreography vs. improvisation, creating a “5-Part Routine,” and to answer questions. Showing starts at noon, Talk + Q&A at 12:30pm.
1pm Melina All Levels
Whisky Tent Dance: Learn Melina’s exciting new choreography with a disco beginning. The dance involves precise drum solo moments, Tunisian hips with turns, dramatic level changes, and more! To the rousing music of Ali Arsoy.
1:30pm Piper All Levels
Arms & Hands: Spice up any dance with new gestures and arm positions. Work with postures and hands to create feeling and atmosphere that works with your music and costume.
2:30pm Driana All Levels
BellyPower: Exercises designed to help find and strengthen muscle groups needed for articulated hip and torso movements, good posture, and ergonomic ankle-knee-hip alignment.
3 - 5pm Lisa Zahiya All Levels
Tribal: In tribal belly dance, dancers learn a common vocabulary of movement, allowing a synchronized performance and through subtle cueing and non-verbal communication. Lisa Zahiya will teach basic movements, cues and techniques that will have participants dancing together by the end of the workshop.
3pm - ? Sidqi All Levels
Middle Eastern Rhythms – Egypt. Bring your drum, cymbals, tambourine, or just yourself! Each day Sidqi will begin at the beginning, and then progress to more advanced techniques and variations, depending on participant experience level.
3:30 - 5pm Piper All Levels
Shimmy Technique + Aziza Drum Solo: back by popular demand! First performed as the winning freestyle solo for the 2000 Belly Dancer of the Year Competition, this is now the Baltimore DoR Ensemble’s signature group choreography.

The Sinuous Taqsim: Body Snakes with Abdominal Rolls and Flutters. Find your inner snake and learn those fluid torso, hip and abdominal movements with the help of the charkas (energy centers of the body).
10am Rhea All Levels
Habibi Ya Nour El Ain Choreography. Find out what Rhea’s Greek students are so crazy about! Satisfying step combinations with multi-purpose arm variations in Rhea’s signature style.
11am Rhea Intermediate to Advanced
Dancing with Cymbals: Zills with Precise Body Placements. We will work together using cymbals in circles and pairs, in lines and in opposing groups. Lots of ideas for innovative cymbal patterns and group staging.
11am Melina Intermediate to Advanced
Prop Balancing – Presentation and Style: learn the sacred art of object balancing while adding drama and flair to your performances with Melina’s proven techniques
Noon Melina
Talk and Discussion: hear some of Melina’s latest (and earliest!) musing and writings – ask what it’s like to be born into a dancing-clown-acrobat-musician family!
1pm Laikis All levels
Greek Folk Dance: Learn the Hasapiko and Kalamatieno basics from a true Zorba-at-heart. Laikis has 30 years of experience teaching non-natives to dance as though they have Greek blood in their veins!
1pm Piper All Levels
Fatamorgana: tell a story with dance. This emotional choreography is filled with fluid body movements and graceful hand gestures. Full and precise notes are included, but personal interpretation is encouraged. Music by Ofra Haza.
1:30pm Melina All levels
Veil: Rectangular, Circular, Wings, etc.! Melina is famous for her veil dancing – learn innovative tucks, dramatic un-tucks, and new moves. Bring your own veil(s). Tucking is easier if you wear a belly dance bra and belt.
2:30pm Melina All levels
Melina’s Signature Gypsy Style: leaps, spins, turns and hip flourishes with flamenco fusion arms for pure dancing fun! Propel yourself across space with earthy verve and lift.
2:30 Piper Intermediate to Advanced
Egyptian Style + 1940’s Movie Choreography. Graceful and controlled, shy yet flirtatious, grounded but tall, the Egyptian Movie Star style has influences from local folkdances to Russian ballet to Hollywood.
3pm - ? Sidqi All Levels

4 – 5pm Piper All levels
Tambourine: It’s fun; it’s easy; you’ll have a good time! This choreography is only a year old, but it’s already been done by previous workshop participants at several area Haflas. Vendors will be selling tambourines + we will have a few loaners.
4 - 5pm Melina Intermediate to Advanced
Pom Pero: Spanish Fusion Choreography with spotting, whirling, flamenco-style kicks, and Greco-Turkish leap turns.
