Toilet Training for Children with Autism and other Developmental Disabilities

presented by

Maranda L. Porter, MS/P
Outreach Coordinator/Behavior Consultant
The Matthew Reardon Center for Autism/Advance Academy

This workshop provides an overview of behaviorally based effective toilet-training programs for children with autism, other developmental disabilities, and/or just hard to train typical developing children. This workshop is aimed at parents as well as professionals who must deal with children that have not responded successfully to traditional methods of toilet training, or show inappropriate elimination patterns. Participants will learn how to measure, implement, and assess the effectiveness of basic behavioral methods for reducing toileting problems. Participants need no prior knowledge or formal training in applied behavior analysis. The presenters will discuss representative cases and their outcomes, and can give advice to participants about approaches to their own cases.

Participants attending this workshop will learn the following:

  • Step-by-step instructions for the development and implementation of effective systematic toilet training.
  • Data collection tools, visual supports, and social stories to promote successful implementation.
  • Increase awareness and knowledge of the impact of Autism and other developmental disabilities on the training of toileting skills.
  • Learn positive and proactive intervention strategies to planning a toileting program.
  • Identify and understand the main triggers for problems in toilet training (problems with body awareness, poor communication skills, fear of new situations or changes to established routines in toileting, and difficulties interpreting bodily sensations for toileting)

This workshop is appropriate for parents and professionals. General CEUs availalble (3.5 contact hours) through Georgia Southern pending approvel.

No refunds after 2/27/2012.

The Matthew Reardon Center for Autism

Welcome to The Matthew Reardon Center for Autism, Inc. We diligently seek to meet the educational and therapeutic needs of children and youth diagnosed with neurological disorders with related communication delays. We offer a variety of programs designed to address these challenges and help these children reach their full potential.

Neurological disorders may be congenital, traumatic, or acquired. Our approach of providing these children with a full range of educational and therapeutic services is designed to ensure that each child receives the individualized attention his/her situation requires in order to equip and enable lifelong success. History bears out the fact that without this multi-disciplinary approach to treat and educate the child, lifelong success is often unattainable.

It is the mission of The Matthew Reardon Center for Autism to improve the quality of life for these children and their families. We are driven by the determination to assist a population historically under-served and hope that through our efforts more families with special-needs children will feel less isolated and more hopeful for the future of their children.
