Understanding and Dividing Retirement Assets in a Divorce

What Professionals Need to Know

4:00-4:30 PM  Meet and talk with other professionals - share ideas - make contacts - enjoy refreshments

4:30-6:00 PM Lecture and discussion

Often retirement assets are the largest assets with equity owned by a divorcing couple. Whether there are IRA, 401k, 403b accounts, public employee pensions or other defined benefit plans, these assets have unique features that must be considered before they are divided. A recognized expert in the field will provide an overview of the different types of retirement assets and what issues need to be addressed when dividing them.

Speaker:

Carol E. Nesson, Esquire

Attorney Nesson practices pension and retirement law in Needham, often assisting other attorneys in pension division and drafting of QDROs. She served as general counsel to the Boston Retirement Board and as a special assistant corporation counsel for the City of Boston, and is an expert on the Massachusetts public pension system. Attorney Nesson was a founder and the first president of the Massachusetts Association of Public Pension Attorneys. She lectures frequently for MCLE and public pension law conferences. Attorney Nesson is a graduate of Simmons College and the Boston University School of Law and has completed the certified financial planner program at Boston University.
