Motivation

Latin America is one of the fastest growing regions of the world, but it is also the region that is the most unequal in distribution of income.  With the growth of the regional economy and with the expansion of global communications, transportation and international trade, the potential for expanding the benefits of globalization to all of its inhabitants has never been greater.  Corporations and states must lead to innovate and develop human capital to create sustainable job and economic growth for all. 

There has been a marked effort to collaborate and share best practices with hemispheric partners as a means to collectively improve the quality of life for our citizens, produce a highly-skilled workforce and labor pool, and create business climates conducive to healthy commercial development that helps the vast majority of the population and provides for consumers who can afford to purchase goods.  This international conference will facilitate a robust dialogue and substantive exchange of ideas on these topics which will eventually feed into the upcoming Sixth Summit of the Americas scheduled to be held in Cartagena, Colombia on April 14-15, 2012.  

Confirmed speakers include: Vice President of the Dominican Republic Rafael Alburquerque, Secretary General of the Organization of American States Jose Miguel Insulza, and Undersecretary for the U.S. Department of Commerce Francisco Sanchez. 

Audience 

Georgetown University, with the support of the U.S. Departments of Commerce and State, will host this international conference and bring together leaders throughout the Western Hemisphere to share strategies and jointly design a roadmap to use economic development to aid in creating prosperity in the region. Participants will include government officials; thought-leaders from academic institutions; pioneers in the business community; and representatives from civil society and international organizations.

Motivación

Latinoamérica es una de las regiones de mayor crecimiento económico a escala mundial; paradójicamente también es la región donde existe el mayor nivel de desigualdad en relación a la distribución de ingresos.  A través del crecimiento de la economía regional y mediante la expansión de la comunicación global, la transportación y el comercio internacional, la posibilidad de extender los beneficios de la globalización a todos sus habitantes ahora es posible.  Por consiguiente, es el deber de corporaciones privadas y de gobiernos regionales promover la innovación y el desarrollo del capital humano, para así crear un capital humano sostenible en conjunto con un crecimiento económico disfrutado por todos.

Últimamente se ha visto un esfuerzo de colaboración y de reparto de “mejores prácticas” entre los países del hemisferio con el fin de mejorar colectivamente la calidad de vida de nuestros ciudadanos.  El mismo busca crear un clima de negocio sostenible para fomentar un desarrollo comercial capaz de ayudar a la mayoría de la población y mejorar su posición económica.  Esta conferencia facilitará el diálogo diligente y el intercambio de ideas sobre estos aspectos, los cuales se retomarán en la Sexta Cumbre de las Américas en Cartagena, Colombia el 14 y 15 de abril, 2012.
