The venue opens at 7pm, with talks starting at 7.30pm sharp. The bar is open till 1am so stick around for a drink and a chat afterwards. Our first talks of 2012 see Drew Neil and Jim Newbery go head-to-head in a progressive enhancement face-off…

Progressive enhancement: a barrier to progress?

Drew Neil

HTML5 makes it possible to build applications in the browser that were previously unimaginable, but to do so we must abandon progressive enhancement. Solving a problem well is better than solving it twice. As the real-time web becomes reality, it's ok to state that JavaScript is a requirement.

Futuristic Progressive Enhancement

Jim Newbery

Progressive enhancement – the development approach that builds out styling and client-side interaction from a base of semantically-structured content – is now eight years old. In that time, the web has changed beyond recognition. Far from being an outdated approach, progressive enhancement is now needed more than ever to help us accommodate the ubiquitous web and alleviate our growing pains.
