About the Miracle League of Alexandria and the Miracle Field Initiative

Who are we?  The Miracle League of Alexandria is comprised of private citizens concerned with supporting recreation opportunities for individuals with special needs.  Members of the working group are:

Laura Fries       Lindsey Swanson       Bob Moir          Bill Rivers
Katey SwansonAllison MacMahon     Katey Swanson        Monica Sanjur
Bruce Milton     Nick Halasz      Terry Burcham

Consulting City Staff:  Mac Slover, Jackie Person, Dana Wedeles

What is a Miracle Field? It is a synthetic turf baseball diamond designed specifically for use by individuals with special needs. The surface is entirely covered in a rubber-like compound that allows a firm, yet cushioned surface for wheelchairs, walkers, etc.

Who does it serve?  The main focus is to allow youth and adult individuals with special needs the ability to play baseball or softball. Given the nature of the field, it can also be used by seniors for softball and kickball and by other youngsters for T-ball.

What does it cost?  The approved 2012 City Budget has moved the Field to the 2013 Capital Improvement Plan. The approved cost to the City will be $285,000.  The private sector will provide $135,000.

Where does the private sector money come from?  Since installation of the Field will be a joint public-private accomplishment, the Miracle League of Alexandria is committed to raising the $135,000 from the private sector.  Donations are expected from individuals, local businesses, and trade associations.

Would donations be tax-deductible?  Yes.  We are partnering with Kelley Cares, a charitable organization dedicated to the support of therapeutic recreation for kids and adults with special needs in the City of Alexandria.

Where would it be located?  At the Lee Center, where there are existing grass fields with ready access to handicapped accessible parking and restroom facilities.

Are there similar fields elsewhere in the country?  Yes, there are 120 completed fields throughout the country, including Manassas Park.

Who to contact if you have questions?  The two principal contacts are Mac Slover, Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities, Sports Division, at 703-746-5407, and Bill Rivers, Youth Sports Advisory Board, at 703-683-6526.
