Event Details

The Five Lakes Silver Band (www.fivelakessilverband.com) continues its 2011-12 concert season on Friday, February 3, 2012 with a program entitled “Songs of The South,” celebrating the melodies of America’s southern heritage.  The concert starts at 8 PM and will take place at the Royal Oak Salvation Army Citadel on North Main Street in Royal Oak.

The program will feature a number of selections showcasing the rich musical heritage of the American South, including selections from “Porgy and Bess,” “Go Down, Moses,” “Deep Harmony,” and others, performed by the unique brass band instrumentation of the Five Lakes Silver Band.

Also on the program is the solo cornet feature “Pandora” by Eugene Demare, to be performed by the principal cornetist of the Five Lakes Silver Band, Mr. Matt Taton.   Mr. Taton is the band director at Mount Pleasant High School, is an active freelance trumpeter in the classical, big band, and jazz scene, and in 2011 won the High Brass Technical Solo competition at the North American Brass Band Championships in Grand Rapids, MI.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors; admission is free for students 18 or younger. Tickets are available here, on our web site, at the door or by contacting Ticket Sales Manager Brian Turner at 734.512.7639.  Group rates are available as well.

The concert comes on the heels of the band’s recent performance at Detroit Midtown’s “Noel Night” festivities in early December to a near capacity crowd at The Cathedral of St. Paul, where they featured selections from their recent recording “Christmas Cards.”  Five Lakes Silver Band - February 3, 2012, 8 PM

Five Lakes Silver Band

Now in its fifth season of making music, The Five Lakes Silver Band was founded in 2007 as The Oakland Brass Band to enhance the experience of music lovers in southeast Michigan and surrounding areas.   The unique instrumentation and voicing of this British style brass band lends itself well to a variety of styles ranging from marches and symphonic works to pop, swing, and Broadway, in addition to challenging, original works composed especially for brass band.  While presenting a regular schedule of series concerts and other special events, the Band is active in bringing music to our youth through their series of clinics and workshops.

Along with an active performance schedule, the band has released 3 recordings and has participated in several key Brass Band competitions.  In April 2011 the Band was awarded the prestigious Hannaford Cup at the Hannaford Street Festival of Bands held in Toronto and will travel their again in April to defend its title.  They will also compete in the North American Brass Band Championships, being held in Cincinnati on March 30-31.
