Dr. Fida Adely will present her recent study of marriage in Jordan. Dr. Adely is an Assistant Professor and the holder of the Clovis and Hala Salaam Maksoud Chair in Arab Studies at the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies in the School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University. She was previously a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of International and Transcultural Studies at Teachers College, Columbia University, as well as a Lecturer at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). Dr. Adely received her Ph.D. in Comparative Education and Anthropology from Columbia University.  

Dr. Adely’s research interests include education in the Arab world, women and development, gender and labor, and development in the Arab world.  Selected publications include Gendered Paradoxes: Educating Jordanian Women in Nation, Faith & Progress, University of Chicago Press (forthcoming in 2012); “God Made Beautiful Things”, American Ethnologist (forthcoming in 2012); “Educating Women for Development” International Journal for Middle East Studies (2009); “Is Music Haram?” Teacher’s College Record (2007).
