Instituto Laboral de la Raza

For thirty years, Instituto Laboral de la Raza has been an indispensable part of the low-income communities that it serves.  Founded in 1982, we are a non-partisan, 501(c)(3) workers' resource organization based in San Francisco's Mission District.  Each year, Instituto serves thousands of families from all Bay Area counties, with approximately 90% of them being of Hispanic heritage.  Most of the individuals that draw on our services are their families’ primary breadwinners, speak little or no English, possess only an elementary education, and have little in the way of financial reserves.

Our doors are open seven days a week from early morning well into the evening, and we welcome both walk-in clients and those with scheduled appointments.  We charge no fees for any of our services, and rely on donations and community grants.

Instituto’s mission is: (1) to provide labor mediation and workplace safety education services for all low-income workers; (2) to collaborate with other community-based organizations to effectively address and serve all other critical needs of the poor and disadvantaged in order to foster economic stability in the family unit, and to enhance the health, cultural and social welfare of all the working families that access our services.

We are well known for hosting a National Labor-Community Awards event every year and a Green Labor Capital Forum every two years.
