Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6—7:45 PM

Starting January 3, 2012 and concluding December 12, 2013.

With sixteen weekend workshops and one retreat.

Dynamic and alive, the lineage of the Buddha’s teachings has the power to liberate us from suffering and pain. The Nyingma Institute is pleased to offer a two-year intensive program inspired by Tarthang Tulku that explores how the path of liberation is activated and applied.

The new quarter synopsis follows for a sample of the depth and richness of the teachings from the very beginning of the program.

An Awakened Vision of Being

Quarter One of the Path of Liberation Program

Taught at the Nyingma Institute, Berkeley, California

This first quarter of the Path of Liberation Program is a journey into the Buddha’s vision of what embodiment means. Teachings illuminate the precious opportunity that our lives represent and trace the path that the Buddha took to enlightenment.

Primary texts: Ways of Enlightenment, Footsteps on the Diamond Path, and Joy of Being.

  • Week 1: Recognizing Awakened Potential
  • Week 2: The Jewels of the Dharma and Sangha
  • Week 3: Developing the Qualities of Enlightened Being
  • Week 4: Stages on the Path
  • Week 5: Awakening Vision
  • Week 6: Types of Teachings and Trainings
  • Week 7: Joy of Being
  • Week 8: How we Embody Suffering
  • Week 9: Becoming Wise
  • Week 10: Knowledge for Transformation

 Weekend Workshops:

DHS401 Visions of Enlightenment

January 13-14: Friday 7--9 PM; Sat. 10 AM—4:45 PM

This workshop explores the unique ways that a fully awakened being manifests. First, we look at Tibetan art as a vital embodiment of enlightenment, examining the ways in which awakened qualities are depicted. We also work with mantra (ways to merge sound with awakened awareness) and Tibetan meditations that evoke the Buddha. Finally, we consider three specific aspects to a Buddha’s embodiment: the Dharmakaya, the Sambhogakaya, and the Nirmanakaya.

DHS402 Faith in Dharma

February 17-18: Friday 7--9 PM; Sat. 10 AM—4:45 PM

The awakening of faith in the Dharma means that we have surrendered our heart to truth. This workshop outlines the steps to such faith. Students will learn to distinguish belief from faith and skepticism from inquiry. Discussion and practice will focus on how to build inner confidence in our own abilities as we seek guidance from those who are wiser.

Classes risk cancellation if the minimum number of students is not achieved BEFORE the first class session. Please call or email now if you are interested in attending.
