2-Day Writing Workshop
"A Million Stories in the Naked City:
Becoming a Successful Memoir or Nonfiction Writer"
Dates: Feb. 23 - 24, 2009
Instructor: Nina Burleigh
Location: San Miguel de Allende

Veteran journalist and author Nina Burleigh has written for dozens of national magazines and newspapers and published four critically acclaimed nonfiction books on subjects ranging from crime to historical adventures and mysteries. She also teaches magazine writing at Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism. Burleigh knows a good story when she sees one, and she knows how to turn a good story idea into an article or a book. Students interested in writing nonfiction or memoir, with the aim of selling articles or books for publication, should come to the class with a few ideas. You will spend the first part of the two-day course reading and analyzing a few great works of short nonfiction and memoir.

In this course you will learn:

  • how to identify a great story
  • how to research
  • how to structure
  • how to make a proposal
  • how to write with precision and energy

About your instructor: Nina Burleigh is the author of four nonfiction books and has been a journalist for 25 years. Her latest book, Unholy Business: A True Tale of Faith, Greed and Forgery in the Holy Land," (Collins, 2008) delves into the murky underworld of biblical relic dealers behind what officials called the religious "fraud of the century." The book has received rave reviews: Publishers Weekly called it a "captivating account" and the Wall Street Journal called it a "lively .. meditation on biblical archaelogy." Previous books include Mirage: Napoleon's Scientists and the Unveiling of Egypt (Harper Collins, 2007), which chronicles the first large-scale interaction between Western civilians and Islam in the modern era.
