*** Upcoming Townhall in San Francisco: Join us on February 26 for networking & presentations! ***

Abstract:

The Bay Area chapter of the Institute for International Film Financing (IIFF) continues its much-acclaimed education & networking events at the junction of film & finance with a one-of-a-kind Film Financing Workshop for Northern California's community of filmmakers, entrepreneurs and financiers. IIFF's friends at Academy of Art University (AAU) in San Francisco are again making their facilities near 4th & King St. available for our full-day training clinic on the art & science of pitching to investors.

This intensive, hands-on learning experience features seasoned fundraising expert and angel investor Dr. Patrick O'Heffernan (bio), who successfully practices what he teaches, having personally raised over $40 million during his distinguished career. It forms an integral part of IIFF's unrivaled series of in-depth seminars with such iconic instructors as Hollywood film financing legend Lew Horwitz (April '08 San Francisco Workshop), IFP founder Sandra Schulberg (April '08 Los Angeles Workshop | February '08 San Francisco Workshop & February '08 Los Angeles Workshop | January '08 Los Angeles Workshop), and Silicon Valley venture capitalist Dr. Frank Greene (July '08 San Francisco Workshop | June '08 Los Angeles Workshop | June '08 Silicon Valley Workshop | May '08 Los Angeles Workshop | March '08 San Francisco Workshop & March '08 Los Angeles Workshop). Dr. O'Heffernan's "Pitching Your Movie" builds on the exceptional popularity of IIFF's monthly Townhall Meetings —originally launched in the S.F. Bay Area during the spring of 2005— and features a highly topical program taught by a world-class expert instructor with a track record of success. Our goal with this and future events is not only to provide unbiased insight & education about the business of film but also to foster & inform productive relationships between attending professionals.

Over the past years, the landscape of film financing has changed considerably and continues to be in flux. The ongoing democratization of the means of film production has loosed an avalanche of competition in independent film, making it more difficult for even the most talented filmmakers to stand out. On the other hand, film is attracting a wider range of financing sources than ever, including a large and diverse group of private equity investors (e.g., so-called angels).

In this environment of change, many of the old rules no longer apply. While content remains king, it is more critical than ever that filmmakers take a proactive, methodical and business-savvy approach to getting their films financed – be they fictional narratives or nonfiction documentaries, features or shorts, or experimental work. To thrive on the challenges ahead, filmmakers need to transform themselves from creative masterminds and technical mavens into holistic film entrepreneurs who navigate the waters of business and finance as competently and confidently as they tackle the creative and technical side of movie production. (After all, the complex and wonderful process of filmmaking starts and ends with the money.) There is no better place to start than the film business plan, the film entrepreneur's systematic roadmap for success.

However, a compelling business plan —even combined with a strong command of the creative, technical, business and financial aspects of filmmaking— is no guarantee of success. Increasingly sophisticated investors demand not just demonstrable expertise but dependable execution. They need to see entrepreneurial & leadership skills that can turn a business plan into a business reality poised for success. In the investment community, it is well understood that better leadership improves the chances of success of any project. To get a film funded, filmmakers must convince prospective investors that they are savvy entrepreneurs and capable leaders who can marshal the required resources and competently steer their venture from funding to completion to payoff.

One of the most vital skills any film entrepreneur can develop and cultivate is the ability to successfully connect with and effectively pitch to investors. The best film business plan and entrepreneurial training go only so far if the filmmakers don't get in front of the right investors (e.g., with the help of FilmAngels) or fail to convince them to fund the movie in question. They typically have one chance to make their case to a particular individual investor or group of investors – be it in the form of a formal or informal, long or short, well-rehearsed or spontaneous, or any other kind of pitch presentation. As such, this pitch may well be the single most defining moment in the relationship between presenting filmmakers and financiers in the audience. It either lays the foundation for moving forward together or establishes that there is, at least for the time being, not a good fit.

While the pitch should be based on a well thought-out business plan, film entrepreneurs are in fact presenting much more than their roadmap for success. They are also giving investors, in a highly condensed fashion, a crucial first impression of their leadership and entrepreneurial skills as well as decisive insights into their personality and character. At a time when investors face a growing number of choices competing for attention and capital, the importance of pitching has never been greater. The pitch is the filmmaker's one-time opportunity to impress & inspire, stand out from the crowd, capture the audience's interest, get the right message across to investors, and plant the seeds for subsequently closing a financing deal. All this needs to be accomplished within a relatively brief time span. It requires a distinctive, highly specialized and uniquely valuable set of skills, which is exactly what this seminar is all about!

Key challenges to creating a successful film project typically include:

  • Developing an engaging story & screenplay with great entertainment value
  • Formulating an inspiring vision that attracts attention, talent & money
  • Crafting a winning business plan & financing strategy
  • Building a project team able to finance, produce & market the film
  • Developing a high-impact message & communicating it effectively to investors
  • Closing the deal with the right financiers & delivering on their expectations

It takes a special kind of highly skilled entrepreneurial leader to tackle all these tasks and, in the process, create a success story for everyone involved. (Outstanding examples of such leaders include self-made movie tycoons George Lucas and Steven Spielberg.) Our in-depth, daylong Workshop has been designed to teach participants how to master the final two critical challenges. It offers practical presentation, rapport-building, persuasion, and deal-closing tools that help any serious filmmaker pitch their project with ease and effectiveness. The ultimate goal is to empower film entrepreneurs to obtain financing and meet or exceed the investor expectations they set. The Workshop can achieve this goal despite its highly condensed time frame by focusing on the most essential lessons distilled from a topical knowledge base that blends our instructor's expertise as an investor & fundraiser with IIFF's tried-and-true formula for film financing success.

Main takeaways from this seminar:

  • Understanding different kinds of investors & their motivations
  • Identifying investors most likely to be receptive to your pitch
  • How to organize your pitch in terms of strategy, timing & content
  • The role of attachments, marketing & distribution in your pitch
  • Using budgets & projections to show you can be trusted with money
  • Why "comps" are important, how to assemble them & their best use
  • Planning your time as a way to raise investor confidence in you
  • What to do if your producer/director/star can't be at the pitch
  • How to use the critical first minute in front of investors
  • Smart things to do & common pitfalls to avoid when pitching
  • Making a great impression & building rapport with investors
  • Staying in control of your pitch & handling investor questions
  • What materials to bring for whom & when (not) to deploy them
  • Follow-up & follow-through strategies that help close the deal
  • What it really takes to get the "yes" answer you need

Who is better equipped to deliver these insights effectively than a former Professor at a leading university who has been active as an angel investor himself, personally raised millions of dollars in capital, and won prestigious awards for his producing work. In short, our expert instructor has successfully used the skills he teaches during years as an investor, fundraiser and producer.

A member of two leading angel investor groups, FilmAngels and the Keiretsu Forum, Dr. Patrick O'Heffernan (bio) is a seasoned fundraising expert and executive, media strategist, award-winning producer, bestselling business author and professional educator. During his distinguished career, he has raised over $40 million in capital. Pursuing his passion for social entrepreneurship, Dr. O'Heffernan blogs for the Skoll Foundation's online community Socialedge.org, and has served on the Board of Directors or Advisors of several foundations and nonprofits (e.g., Link TV). A former Political Science Professor at Georgia Tech, Dr. O'Heffernan pioneered the use of global advocacy television to support. He has published 6 books and dozens of articles, and provided on-air commentary for National Public Radio (NPR). Among his many notable achievements, Dr. O'Heffernan won an Emmy, four Tellys, a Webby Honor Award, as well as international awards for environmental and entrepreneurial work.

IIFF cordially invites you to learn uniquely valuable lessons about succeeding as a film entrepreneur and mastering the art & science of pitching from Dr. O'Heffernan (bio) at an intensive, full-day Film Financing Workshop that is the first of its kind. Never before has a real-world angel investor spent an entire day teaching filmmakers how to raise money from investors such as himself. Our seasoned instructor's deep insights are not simply based on anecdotal evidence or varying personal experience, but on the thoughtful analysis of a highly respected expert. What is more, the lessons conveyed are specifically relevant to the investor financing of independent films, as opposed to, say, the bank financing of studio pictures where different rules may apply.

Who should participate? Established and aspiring filmmakers looking to raise venture capital for their independent films, production companies, movie slates, film funds, or other film-related ventures are well advised to attend this high-value yet low-cost seminar. Entrepreneurs, technologists, attorneys, bankers, investment managers, venture capitalists, and other professionals with an interest in the film business will also find the Workshop worthwhile. Are you considering taking an active role in film or would you like to expand your current involvement? Don't miss this rare opportunity to gain highly relevant insights from a pitching and fundraising expert – and connect with like-minded peers in the process!
