Event Details

The 2012 DC Black Theatre Festival Workshop and Conference is an educational and motivational opportunity for writers, producers of all levels. Our experienced speakers include authors, poets, film writers, playwrights, writing instructors, editors, and publishers. Learn how to manage all aspects of the theatre’s publicity and advertising material including, fliers, posters, press adverts, brochures, newsletters and websites, while overseeing content, design, production and arrange distribution of all printed material.

The 5 Minute Pitch:

I view hundreds of presentations over the course of the year. I’m frequently surprised by how many presentations don’t convey a clear story. A great “play pitch” presentation leaves venture capitalists, prospects, and judges inspired. The audience should walk away with the ability to restate your vision, a clear picture of how you will achieve that vision, and the economic ramifications of attaining it. Learn how, then Pitch your play to Our Producers.

Creating Legislation: Alternative Funding Raising:

Are you tire of looking for money the old fashion way, begging? Then learn how to go after the big bucks. This workshop teaches how to go after government dollars and create an entire new approach to raising funds.

Story Telling As Theatre:

Learn to use interactive performances in the oldest form 'The art of oral storytelling' drama, music and dance to help educate and enhance the creative potential, self-confidence and self-esteem of children and young people from varied backgrounds. Led by Nana Malaya, a master story teller with 30 years of experience.

Is Your Play Ready For Main Stream:

More importantly, are you? Learning how the business really works, creating the best possible resume, finding a photographer, scheduling a shoot date, then bringing back your pictures, choosing the right one given your type, finalizing your resume, absorbing info on agents, submissions, and auditioning. By the end of this class you will have your entire business package ready and you will go on at least one audition. No excuses - we do what we say, we do - WE ACT.

Acting 101:

The basics. Exercises. Character preparation. Learning the craft from the ground up. Learning to open up, express yourself, and find the true artist inside. Scene Study and improvisation. A wonderful basic class for those new to acting. Through basic exercises we unleash your creative talent and discover your artistic side. The work is focused on opening up feelings, full expression, and getting in touch with your passion.
