Event Details

In the ongoing quest for buildings that consume less energy and minimize their impact on the environment, the concept of  Net Zero energy buildings is gaining increasing attention.  While the definition of Net Zero energy varies with the context, one of the primary goals for these buildings are to produce as much energy as they consume. While the investment in dollars and resources to reach net-zero energy buildings are significant, there are a handful of projects demonstrating that it is possible.

Our speakers Becky Walker and Chris Brown will each share their work at the policy and building scale of net zero energy projects.

As the Program Manager at PECI, Becky Walker manages the operations of the Energy Trust of Oregon New Buildings program and oversees the development and implementation of the Path to Net Zero pilot. She will present on the program, its success and lessons learned over the time that the program has been in place. Ms. Walker also has a background in energy policy research with a focus on program design and administration. Her work experience includes energy program implementation, energy research, grant-giving, and outreach and marketing campaigns.

Our second speaker, Chris Brown is an Architect with Opsis Architecture in Portland and served as the Project Architect for Hood River Middle School, Hood River, OR. This school has achieved Net-Zero energy and was one of the first few projects included in the ETO Path to Net Zero Pilot program; it is also currently pursuing LEED Platinum Certification. Chris will describe the design process, the challenges and opportunities that helped achieve the Net Zero energy goal and more importantly the project becoming a “teaching tool” for its community. Chris’s belief in the importance of education has led him to work on dozens of school projects throughout his career, with a particular emphasis on improving the learning environment for students through sustainable design.

Pastries and coffee will be provided.
