The goal of this 8-hour course is to enhance the skills and abilities of incumbent public safety dispatchers in responding to an ever-increasing suicide rate, along with the need to identify strategies for addressing these types of incidents in the most effective and professional manner possible. While the course focuses upon the framework of handling suicidal callers, special attention is given to post-traumatic stress and how it affects the public safety dispatcher along with other emergency services workers. The overall goal of the course is to provide participants with contemporary background information on suicide, discuss recent statistics and trends, explore relevant behavioral indicators, identify potential intervention techniques and promote a better understanding of the personal long-term impact inherent to dealing with suicidal individuals. The course is also intended to create an awareness of potential clues of emotional distress, signs and symptoms of traumatic stress, and pre-suicidal indicators, which may surface among co-workers and others. The course also addresses strategies for providing peer assistance, encouraging the pursuit of appropriate help, and identifying the availability of appropriate professional resources.
