This is a mixer for bioscience women executives and allied service providers affiliated with SoCalBio to encourage networking and mutual support among bioscience women executives and company managers in Southern California.

With thirty years in the Medical Device Industry, over twenty as a senior executive, Ms. Helfer brings management expertise in Serial Entrepreneurship, Product Development, R&D, Business Development, Operations Management, and International Sales and Marketing for Fortune 500 companies and start-up companies. She is Chairman, Founder & CEO of Epic Medical Inc, a UCLA technology-licensed medical device company.



Sharon Stevenson, DVM, PHD

Okapi Venture Capital


Sharon is a Co-Founder and Managing Director of Okapi Venture Capital and focuses on Okapi Ventures' life science investments. Sharon was responsible for Okapi’s investment in Helixis (acq: ILMN), and serves as a Director on the boards of Okapi portfolio companies OrthAlign, Obalon Therapeutics, PathCentral, and WellTok.  Prior to founding Okapi, Sharon was the Senior Vice President of Technology and Planning for SkinMedica- a private, venture-backed, commercial stage specialty pharmaceutical company focused on the dermatology and human appearance markets. Prior to SkinMedica, Sharon was a Principal with Domain Associates, LLC - a venture capital fund specializing in life science investments. In addition to performing due diligence and working closely with portfolio companies while at Domain, she also served as President and CFO of Volcano Therapeutics (Nasdaq: VOLC) and lead the company's growth from 1 to 14 employees and from the initial design of the first product to the first clinical trials using the device.

The Southern California Biomedical Council is a nonprofit, member-supported trade association that supports and promotes life-science research, development, manufacturing, job creation and overall economic growth in the six counties that comprise the Greater Los Angeles region (Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Riverside and San Bernardino). The Council’s programs help local firms gain access to capital, potential partners and business support services. SoCalBio also promotes technology transfer and workforce training, while informing policy makers and the public at-large about the benefits of the region’s life-science industry.  SoCalBio is open to membership by firms and organizations engaged in life-science technology development and commercialization.
