Green Home Workshop: Put Your Driveway and Sidewalk on a Low Salt Diet
Thursday, February 9, 2012 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM (EST)
Alternative Products and Hands-On Tips for Your Home
Nobody wants to slip and slide on their sidewalks and driveways, but we don't want salt to burn pet paws, damage plants, or pollute rivers and groundwater either. What can we do to reduce our salt use? What are the best tools for winter shoveling and chipping? What are the most effective salt alternative products?
Come and find out from Colleen Brown, Water Education Coordinator with the Region of Waterloo. Be prepared to bundle up and head outside to try a variety of chippers, shovels and salt alternatives, and see what works best for you.
- Introduction to RAIN and Smart About Salt programs
- Understanding the problems related to outdoor salt use
- Mechanical tips and techniques for reducing ice
- Review of alternative products
- Outdoor test of shovels, choppers, salt alternatives on test ice patches
- Discussion of best practices on permeable paving
- Colleen Brown, Water Education Coordinator, Region of Waterloo
- Cheryl Evans, Water Education and Events Coordinator, REEP Green Solution
