If you have never built an Android mobile application or have been building apps with Android, but have not use Layout components much, this class is for you.  In this hands-on workshop, we will take a tour through LinearLayout, RelativeLayout and FrameLayout, get acquainted with their various attributes, and understand their usage with examples.  Chiu-Ki will demonstrate techniques and you will have a chance to use different components and layouts to modify the main screen of your application.

Preparation: Install the Android SDK on your laptop and complete the Hello World tutorial: http://developer.android.com/resources/tutorials/hello-world.html -- you can also come early to set up then.

Chiu-Ki Chan was on the Google Android server team when the first Android phone "G1" came out. She switched to apps development when she moved to the maps team, building Google Mobile Maps for Android. After a brief stint in web development at two startups, Chiu-Ki is now back to her Android roots with her own company for Android development. The first title is "Monkey Write", an app to learn Chinese writing on Android tablets.
