You should engage in and carry out this work with the vow to include one thousand or ten thousand lives in one day or one time.
Each season brings new challenges for honeybees and the beekeeper. We will learn about how to anticipate the seasons and their challenges. The following topics will be addressed: understanding the need for beekeeping rituals; observing and interpreting the signs that bees give us; understanding the weather through bee senses; becoming knowledgeable about bee population buildup; selecting the best location for your hive; dealing with swarming; being proactive about bee health; introducing a queen to a colony; enlarging the hive for honey production; inspecting a hive and diagnosing problems; deciding when to feed the hive; detecting honey flows. For those who ordered bee packages, they will be distributed at the end of the workshop and the instructor will demonstrate how to safely introduce them into the hive. Please bring a bee veil and other protective equipment.
Wear light colored clothing. A vegetarian lunch is included in the cost of registration.

Alan Hawkins received the bodhisattva precepts (jukai) in 1992 and works with bees at Green Gulch and in Tracy. In 2011, he facilitated the establishing of hives and harvesting honey at City Center in San Francisco.
