The PTA Course in Wales has recently been revised, and it is now a requirement for all members crewing a St. John Frontline A&E Ambulance to hold this qualification. The course is a mixture of theory and practical elements and enables members to combine all skills that have previously been gained in the pre-requiste courses (see below), in addition the utilisation of ambulance equipment, patient assessment and history taking skills, common respiratory complaints, Mental Health and Infection Control.

This is a 3-Day Course with all teaching elements carried out on Day 1 and 2. Theory Examinations will also take place on Day 2, but all Practical Examinations on Day 3.

Any member wishing to sit this course must hold the following pre-requisites:

• First Aid at Work (FAW)
• Medical Gases
• Automated External Defibrillation (AED)
• Manual Handline A&B
• Ambulance Familiarisation

All members who meet the criteria and apply for a place, will be subject to a pre-course interview to discuss experiences and so suitability for the course can be evaluated. This is also an oppportunity for members to meet the trainers and recieve their PTA Student Handbook.
