The Drum Course
Friday, July 13, 2012 at 9:00 AM - Sunday, July 15, 2012 at 1:00 PM (CDT)
The Drum Course provides drumming instruction (techniques and rhythms) for a variety of popular instruments, including congas, djembe, bongos, darbuka (doumbek) and a variety of hand percussion. Attendees receive personal guidance in playing technique, identifying instruments by name, country or origin, and genre. Drums and percussion instruments are experienced alone and in drumming ensembles, within the context of traditional music (songs and dances) from various countries.
The Drum Course is the logical next step for:
- Music Teachers (Orff Schulwerk and Genreal)
- Music Therapists
- Drumming Facilitators and Leaders
- Beginning and Intermediate Drummers
- All Musicians and Dancers
Attendees learn how to hold and play primary sounds on hand drums, frame drums, and hand percussion instruments. Specific rhythms are learned and performed in ensembles where various roles (ground, rhythm accompaniment, soloist, etc.) are experienced first-hand. Rhythm ensembles are formed and experienced through songs and dances from Latin America, Brazil, West Africa, and Arab countries. Adaptations for other popular applications for group drumming, such as drum circles, drum classes, and drumming in music education and music therapy are discussed.
