COURSE DESCRIPTION

Brain injury is a complex diagnosis ranging from very impaired to no observable symptoms. This course will review the basics in brain injury as well as ways to assess the population, identify secondary effects, and review of medical management for these patients relative to function. In addition, it will cover current issues related to the brain injury population including the aging brain injury, mild TBI, and incorporating cognitive therapy for functional improvements.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

• Identify neuroanatomical pathology related to clinical presentation
• Complete a thorough examination of the patient utilizing standardized tools and clinical assessment for a complete clinical picture of involvement at all levels of ICF model
• Discuss medical management of the traumatic brain injury population and effects on physical function
• Describe secondary risk factors and conditions related to primary TBI pathology
• Summarize treatment interventions appropriate for current patient status
• Complete psychomotor skills for intervention implementation and progression
• Discuss current topics in TBI management relative to research and trends
 

INTENDED AUDIENCE

PTs, PTAs, OTs, and COTAs with exposure to or interest in brain injury rehabilitation. Course will cover acute, sub-acute, post-acute, and community re-entry phases of recovery.

Currently Brooks has four post-professional education programs including a multidisciplinary Geriatric Residency (includes residents from OT, Nursing, SLP, and PT), a PT Neurologic Residency, a PT Orthopaedic Residency, and an Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy Fellowship.  Brooks Rehabilitation offers over 25 post-professional continuing courses each year that includes a wide variety of course offerings for multiple disciplines and a variety of specialty practice areas.  The speakers include both nationally renowned experts from around the country as well as nationally recognized clinical experts that currently practice within Brooks.
