2-Day Writing Workshop
"World Travels & Travel Writing: Turning One Passion into the Other"

Dates: Feb. 23 - 24, 2009
Instructor: Laurie Gough
Location: San Miguel de Allende

open roadLive your travels over again by writing about them, and become a travel writer in the process.  Join award-winning travel author Laurie Gough in a seminar focusing on the specifics of launching a travel writing career. You’ll learn that to be an effective travel writer you must lead the reader into the wonder and terror of the place you’re describing, always remembering that your experience can only be conveyed through details. We’ll discuss ‘finding’ the story and how this isn’t something you can anticipate before leaving; traveling for a story as opposed to traveling for travel’s sake; the various types of travel writing; how the ‘quest’ makes for a good travel story; travel journals; the ups and downs of travel writing as a career; and ideas on how to proceed in today’s changing market.  We’ll also be doing creative writing exercises to get your mind flowing.  You’ll have the opportunity, on the second day, to share your travel writing homework (or a travel piece you’ve been working on) with Laurie and the group, and to be given (and help give) feedback.

Laurie GoughAbout Your Instructor: Lauded by Time magazine as “one of the new generation of intrepid female travel writers,” Laurie Gough is author of Kiss the Sunset Pig (Penguin), and Kite Strings of the Southern Cross: A Woman’s Travel Odyssey (Travelers’ Tales and Bantam) shortlisted for the Thomas Cook Travel Book Award, and silver medal winner of ForeWord Magazine’s Travel Book of the Year in the US.  Eighteen of her stories have been anthologized in various literary travel books, including Salon.Com's Wanderlust: Real-Life Tales of Adventure and Romance; AWOL: Tales for Travel-Inspired Minds; Sand in My Bra: Funny Women Write From the Road; Hyenas Laughed at Me and Now I know Why: The Best of Travel Humor and Misadventure; and More Sand in My Bra.  She has written for salon.com, The L.A. Times, The Globe and Mail, The National Post, The Vancouver Sun, Outpost, Canadian Geographic, The Daily Express, and In London, among others. www.lauriegough.com
