The Vancouver chapter of the Institute for International Film Financing (IIFF) continues its popular monthly gatherings at the junction of film & finance with a special Film Financing Townhall at the renowned Vancouver Film School. Their facilities are conveniently located in downtown Vancouver.

This grassroots community get-together is designed to foster & inform productive relationships between attendees. It provides unbiased insight & education about the business of film and film financing in particular. The event features a powerful roster of highly topical speakers from the filmmaking and financial industries. We are delighted to welcome real-world financiers among our guests!

The evening's five presentations plus panel discussion address key issues relevant to filmmakers, financiers and anyone interested in the economics, business mechanics, and financial dynamics of motion pictures. They are followed by Q&A time. Attendees also have ample opportunity to interact & network with our featured experts and amongst themselves.

An informal après-meeting celebration will take place at a nearby restaurant.

Host logoThis month's Film Financing Townhall in Vancouver is hosted by the esteemed Vancouver Film School, a leading private entertainment arts school located in downtown Vancouver. VFS trains students in immersive production-oriented programs, each spanning one year or less, that encompass all aspects of visual media, from Film Production to Game Design to Animation and Visual Effects to Acting to Sound and more. Practicing industry professionals guide students as they create professional-quality reels and portfolios. In recent years, VFS alumni have won Oscars, Emmys and Independent Spirit Awards, and their work is showcased in hundreds of recent films, TV series and video games.

Speaker Bios

Christine Haebler

Speaker headshot 1Christine Haebler is a 25 year film veteran, and spent the 80′s and early 90′s in various production positions working on films such as The Navigator, Willow, Immediate Family, Jennifer 8, Intersection and Little Women. She moved into producing Canadian films and earned a Best Motion Picture Genie nomination for her first producing venture, "Hard Core Logo", and also produced Gary Burns’s “Kitchen Party”, “Tail Lights Fade”, and Ben Ratner’s “Moving Malcolm.” In 2007 she co-produced Peter Greenaway’s “Nightwatching.” (Martin Freeman), which premiered at Venice and TIFF. In 2009 she co-produced a Sandra Nettelbeck film title “Helen” (Ashley Judd, Goran Vijnic), which premiered at Sundance Film Festival. She recently produced "Daydream Nation" (Kat Dennings, Andie MacDowell). (more) »

Doran Chandler

He has provided legal services for clients and projects including: “Blood Ties” (Christina Cox), “Painkiller Jane” (Kristanna Loken), “The Hurt Locker” (Katheryn Bigelow), Sanctuary (SciFi), and more. He also served as an entertainment lawyer at Davis LLP. After his previous career as a musician, touring North America with a folk-rock band, Mr. Chandler settled in Vancouver to pursue his legal career. Tom Adair

Speaker headshot 3Tom Adair is currently the Executive Director at BC Council of Film Unions, a post he has held for 13 years. The Council is comprised of the three founding I.A.T.S.E. and Teamsters member unions. The Council’s Master Collective Agreement is bargained with Negotiating Producers representatives from The Alliance of Motion Picture Producers Associations (AMPTP) and the Canadian Motion Picture Association (CMPA). The BC Council Agreement provides certainty regarding terms, conditions, and rates for filmmakers to fulfill the creative visions of film, media and television artists. An innovative and ambitious social-impact organization, IIFF endeavors to bridge the gap between the worlds of filmmaking and finance for the benefit of all stakeholders including the public at large. Founded in 2003 and headquartered in San Francisco, IIFF has active chapters in multiple cities across the U.S. and continues to expand.

In his role as Managing Director of FilmAngels, Thomas also runs the world's first professional angel investor group for film. FilmAngels has been modeled after the way successful angel networks function in Silicon Valley and adapted to the unique characteristics of the movie industry. It focuses exclusively on funding independent films and film-related ventures.
