Event Details

January 19, 2005 Location: Garage 1, upstairs room in Building 4 on Apple Campus. 4 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California 95014 Time: 7:30-9:45pm Enterprise Grade Virtualization with Open Source Technologies Virtualization is a new and hot item to the world of Linux and Windows. There have been, however, virtualization technologies for over 40 years, starting with the IBM emulators for mainframes, and later with the CP67 and VM virtualizing operating systems. Open Source operating systems like Linux offer the potential to make virtualization fast, easy and a commodity by introducing the required changes into the OS as part of the standard kernel. Fast virtualization with a low overhead, furthermore makes it possible for the first time to use it in production environments (rather than just test and development). Xen, the leading Open Source virtualization technology has quickly become a standard adopted by many leading ISVs to build comprehensive data center efficiency and management solutions. This presentation will provide an overview of Xen and discuss best practices for deploying it to achieve enterprise grade virtualization. Simon Crosby, VP Strategy Prior to helping found XenSource, Simon was a Principal Engineer at Intel where he led strategic research in distributed autonomic computing, platform security and trust. Previously Simon founded CPlane Inc., a network optimization software vendor. At CPlane Simon held the roles of President & CEO, Chairman, CTO and Chief Strategy Officer. Prior to CPlane Simon was a tenured faculty member at Cambridge University, UK, where he led research network performance and control and multimedia operating systems. He is author of over 35 research papers and patents. Sean Perry, Software Developer Sean (aka Shaleh) Perry is a software developer at XenSource where he works on platform projects. He has been using GNU/Linux since 1997. Project highlights include being a member of Debian since 1998, having been a co-maintainer of the Blackbox window manager, and revitalizing anacron. His career started as a system administrator for a small ISP before moving to Silicon Valley in 1999 to join VA Linux Systems (then VA Research). After VA he worked on the Linux Standards Base for OSDL and at an iSCSI startup. Brian Lavender, QA Engineer Brian Lavender is responsible for development and implementation of test tools for Xen functionality and performance at XenSource, as well as developing tools for automated system deployment with various configuration and test processes. Brian has 10 years experience in programming/admin with seven devoted to GNU/Linux. He founded the Sacramento Linux Users Group (SacLUG) where he has presented on a wide range of topics. Brian recently performed admin/automation and quality assurance tasks for the construction of the world.s second fastest supercomputer cluster, called "Thunder". Brian has also completed various independent consulting GNU/Linux projects where he has configured systems to run small businesses. Brian holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Cal Poly. NetBSD 3 for System Administrators: an Overview You may be familiar with NetBSD as an excellent platform for embedded systems development, or as a highly portable OS which supports legacy hardware ranging from the Sun 3 to the Alpha. But did you know that NetBSD is a full-featured, modern OS that also works very well as a general-purpose OS? See what NetBSD 3.0 has to offer from a system administrator's perspective in this brief overview designed to highlight some of NetBSD's distinctive features. Jeff Rizzo, NetBSD developer Jeff Rizzo is a NetBSD developer, member of the NetBSD Release Engineering Team, and a 12-year user of NetBSD (since version 0.9A on his Amiga 2500!). In his professional life, he has been Network Architect for NETCOM On-line Communications, Sr. Network Engineer for Digital Equipment Corporation's PAIX, and Principal Network Architect for Equinix, Inc. He is currently an independent network consultant for Red Crow Group LLC.
