Celebrate International Babywearing Week 2011: A World of Possibilities, by making your own faux Ball Baby Overall mei tai at this two-hour workshop. This carrier is suitable for front, back, and (to a lesser extent) hip carries, and is a favorite among babywearers. You need to have basic sewing skills for this project. You need to know how to sew straight seams, sew forward and backward, wind a bobbin, pin fabric, and iron fabric. There are no curved seams, no fasteners to install, and no paper pattern pieces to deal with.
Bring the following to the workshop:
1. A sewing machine. (If you can't bring a sewing machine, please contact Susie Spence, susiespence@gmail.com. Hancock Fabrics has two machines available and some members have machines available.)
2. 2 1/3 yards of print canvas (from the home dec department) or denim. DO NOT bring quilting cotton or any similar lightweight fabric. Please also avoid stretchy fabric.
3. Polyester thread to match your fabric. Please do not bring cotton thread, as it is not as strong as polyester thread.
4. Scissors.
5. Pins.
6. Tape measure and/or yardstick.

Babywearing International of Birmingham
Babywearing International of Birmingham is a nonprofit, tax-exempt charity whose mission is to promote the practice of babywearing by empowering parents to use any kind of baby carrier. We provide monthly educational meetings where we stress safety and demonstrate comfortable and ergonomically preferable ways to carry babies and toddlers in a variety of soft baby carriers. Our Volunteer Babywearing Educators are knowledgeable about many different types of baby carriers, from highly structured commercial baby carriers to traditional carrying scarves used by indigenous peoples around the world. We also have experience with a variety of homemade baby carriers and encourage the use of safe materials and designs for these carriers.
