Relay Basics 100 Training by Robert Hafer

Class offering Nov. 8-10, 2011 taught by Robert Hafer: Relay Basics 100 Training Course
ENOSERV and instructor Robert Hafer have joined together to present the Relay Basics100 Training Course by Robert Hafer. The trainee relay techs will be led through this fast-paced three-day course by a practicing relay technician who has experienced the questions and problems that the trainees will encounter. Robert has 15 years of experience as a relay technician tempered by 30 years of hands-on experience in generation and substation maintenance.
Attend the class at the Enoserv Training Facility in Tulsa, Oklahoma during November 8-10, 2011 and you will receive presentations on:
- The What-Why-Who-Where-How of relay protection
- Problem solving and the relay technician
- Tools of the Trade - language of relay protection, print reading, test equipment and more
- Station specific overview - specific protection requirements for distribution, transmission and generation stations
- Basic mathematics for relay techs (answers the question "Do I really need a degree in math to be a Relay Tech?")
- Ground Directional Relay IRD-9 - study of the electro-mechanical overcurrent and ohmic relay
- Introduction to digital relays - study of architecture, logic, and programming of SEL-751 distribution relay
You will learn:
- The importance of Communications
- Use of problem solving techniques in work habits
- The use of the R – X Diagram in relay work
- How to convert impedance values to Resistance and Reactance values
- The torque-producing components in an ohmic relay
- Testing high burden ground directional electro-mechanical relays
- How to access, program and test a multi-function digital relay
Prerequisites of this course include a math background in basic algebra and trigonometry. Students need a working knowledge of D.C. and A.C. theory with practical experience preferred in circuit analysis and troubleshooting. Previous exposure to protective relays will be helpful but not necessary. Knowledge of IEEE Device numbers will greatly assist the student in class exercises involving print reading. Students need to bring a laptop computer equipped with a serial port or a USB to Serial adapter and a handheld calculator.
Class times are as follows: Day One- 8:00AM-5PM, Day Two- 8AM-5PM, Day Three- 8AM-5PM.

The class fee will not be refunded, but can be credited to a future class. In the unlikely event of the program being canceled, ENOSERV will automatically make a full refund but disclaim any further liability.
