LEED and the Aesthetics of Buildings: A Regional PerspectiveWednesday, October 5, 2011 from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM (PT)Santa Cruz, CA |
|
Event Details
Is there a necessary contradiction between the green design of buildings
under the LEED rating system and the aesthetics of the buildings which
are built? Many people seem to think so. Our October speakers will
help our audience (architects, builders, interior designers, and green
construction students), to frame their own answers to the problematic
question of sustainable architectural design.
The form we choose to give our buildings is informed by a multitude of
factors, and it is imperative that sustainable building increasingly
take precedence among them. Daniel Silvernail, M.Arch. A.I.A., will
discuss how the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
certification system informs the design process and thus, to an ever
increasing extent, the aesthetic content of our built environment.
Heather Marquand, AIA Arch, USGBC Faculty Member, will discuss the LEED
advantages of regional design. What does define "beautiful"? Or
"ugly"? And does the incorporation of sustainability have a major impact
on the aesthetic outcome of the project? If so, is that impact
detrimental or beneficial, and how can we harness it to better create
sustainable, local projects that respond to our region's environment and
distinct aesthetic? We'll investigate these somewhat subjective
questions in the hopes of spurring some ongoing debate.
By the end of the session, everyone should have a better idea about what
environmental and aesthetic tools we have available in the beautiful
Monterey Bay Area, and which ones may best complement their individual
concepts of "beauty."
