Transforming the Legacy: Couple Therapy with  Survivors of  Childhood and / or Combat Trauma

Dr. Basham will discuss working with couples where one or both partners have      experienced childhood trauma and/or combat trauma. Her clinical social work     approach is relationship-based, culturally responsive, theoretically grounded and       research informed. She will demonstrate ways that a complex multi-layered    assessment guides the development of a phase-oriented therapy plan, with case    examples illustrating direct application to practice.

Objectives:

1.  Demonstrate knowledge of neurobiological effects and internal relational schemas that affect the couple dyad.

2.  Develop a couple therapy plan guided by a complex biopsychosocial-spiritual assessment that draws upon a balance of risk and protective factors.

3.  Recognize specific clinical intervention skills during each phase of therapy

4.  Identify secondary trauma and re-traumatization within the clinician and develop methods to address these responses.

5.  Develop methods for addressing  enactments

Kathryn Basham, Ph.D., LICSW, as Professor, Co-Director of the Doctoral Program and Editor of the Smith College Studies in Social Work, engages in research, writing, clinical social work practice and education related to the effects of deployment and combat stress on service members, Veterans and their families.   Her co-authored text, Transforming the Legacy: Couple Therapy with Survivors of Childhood Trauma introduces a phase-oriented practice model grounded in a synthesis of social, biological and psychological theories.
