Elastic Map Reduce (Amazon EMR) is Amazon’s Hadoop offering built on top of
Amazon Compute Cloud plaform. It is
based on the ‘Pay as You Use’ model, and one can think of it as ‘Hadoop on Demand’.
In this
class you will learn to use EMR. We will
cover Amazon EMR concepts, and basic EMR APIs.
And in our hands-on lab, we will use EMR for some data crunching. Some practical tips culled from the guru’s personal
experiences with EMR will also be explained.
Guru
Sujee Maniyam has been consulting as a BigData
architect. His clients include early stage startups in online advertising and
enterprise companies like Hitachi Data Systems. Sujee has been developing
software for the past 12 years in a variety of technologies (enterprise, web
and mobile). His current interests are in Hadoop, BigData and NOSQL and Amazon
Cloud Services.
His articles about Hadoop and Amazon Cloud services and his
open source work can be found at this site.
Lab Work
We will learn EMR APIs and use EMR to process data on Amazon cluster (each students gets
their own cluster to work on!)
