Overview:

The Deadman Desert Camp is one of the clubs annual and most popular retreats! This is a great weekend in beautiful Anza-Borrego State Park training, exploring, enjoying the beauty of the desert and socializing with your friends and fellow club members.

Friday: About half the group will show up Friday. Some will get there in the afternoon and will go for a bike ride or hike. Others will show up in the late afternoon and set up their tent and just do a little relaxing. People will continue to arrive usually up until midnight. Dinner is on your own Friday night. We will also have a bonfire, drinks of your choice plus a good opportunity to socialize a bit.

Saturday: For those driving from San Diego, an average drive time would be about 2 hours. Those that arrived Friday, sleep in, eat breakfast and ride to the start of the bike ride. Breakfast is very casual, supply you own food. The bike ride starts at 9AM. The standard ride is to the Salton Sea and back. Round trip is about 60 miles. If you are not up for that type of mileage, you can turn around at any time to shorten the ride. The course is hilly and can be VERY windy.

There are other ride options and all are hilly and with a bit more auto traffic. Some people choose to go for a hike and others seem to hang out at the campground all day. Post bike ride, a handful of people eat lunch in town or go for a jog. Then back to the camp for an afternoon hike up Palm Canyon or a little relaxation and dinner preparation. The Saturday dinner will be a BBQ feast. Once again with the bonfire, live music and perhaps a night hike. (Bring headlamps)

Sunday: For some reason people tend to not sleep in. Many get up early to do a sunrise run, ride or hike. A group breakfast and the Hilltop Challenge highlight the morning around 9 a.m. Some people will go for a bike ride before heading back to San Diego. Most people are on the road back by 11AM and home by 1PM.

Volunteers needed for workouts, meals and, especially, Sunday clean-up!

Weather: The desert can have a wide range of temperatures in the winter. Average temps for this time of year are quite pleasant with day temps in the 70's and night temps in the 40's. However, come prepared for rain and night temps dropping as low as the 30's.

Accommodations: The campground does have showers. Twenty-five cents for two minutes of hot water. Bring your quarters. Plenty of space for tents just finds a nice flat and sandy spot. Some people will just sleep in the back of their SUV or truck. There are hotels in town if neither of these choices works for you.

Food/Drinks: The club will provide the following meals: Saturday afternoon snacks, Saturday evening BBQ and the Sunday Breakfast. Please bring your own items for Friday Dinner & Saturday Breakfast and Lunch. Bring your own alcoholic beverages if you like.

Dogs: Although dogs are permitted at the campground, we strongly discourage bringing them. If you bring them, they need to be leashed and attended to AT ALL TIMES. They must be kept completely away from all picnic tables and surrounding areas where there is any food. It's a crime if they chase the wildlife. The weather can get warm so if you plan on doing the bike ride, find someone to watch over the dog. NOTE: We've had problems in the past, so please be responsible 'parents'.

Directions from North and Central San Diego:

Take Hwy 15 to Scripps Poway Pkwy-go right (east). Go about 5.5 miles and turn left at the top of the hill which is Hwy 67. Take Hwy 67 through Ramona, it becomes Hwy 78. Keep going to Santa Isabel. Turn left at Dudley's Bakery which is Hwy 79. Follow Hwy 79 11 miles to San Felipe Road (S2). Turn left on Montezuma Valley Rd (S22). At the bottom of the long downhill is Borrego Springs.

For the ride, head east into town about 1 mile to the Christmas Circle. Leave yourself about 2 hours to get there from the center of San Diego.

For the campground, at the bottom of the long downhill, turn left, the follow the signs for Palm Canyon Group Campground. We will be in group campsites G3, G4 and G5. Pick up a parking pass which is $5 per day.

What to Bring: All your training gear, a tent, sleeping bag, chair to sit around the bonfire, your personal items, Saturday breakfast/lunch, and a bundle of firewood.
