Event Details

Bob Dixson has led Greensburg through an amazing period. He became Mayor of the community shortly after the EF-5 tornado destroyed much of the town and killed eleven. Today Greensburg is an icon for sustainable construction - which is not without challenges.  Mayor Dixson will talk about where Greensburg is today, how it got there and what the future holds for the Kansas town that defied the odds to be the Greenest City in America.

About our Speaker…

Bob Dixson has served as the Mayor of Greensburg, KS (pop 1,574) since May 2008. He is a Kansas native and has been a resident of Greensburg since 1985.  The mayor has held an influential role in Greensburg's rebuilding efforts, implementing green technology and policy after the 2007 tornado.

Mayor Dixson strives to make Greensburg the "greenest city in America."  This city's rebuilding efforts include utilizing 100 percent wind power and implementing a resolution that all government buildings are built to LEED platinum specifications, including Greensburg's city hall, a school, and a county hospital.  In addition to a re-built Main Street streetscape, the following civic accomplishments have been realized:

·  SunChips Business Incubator: a new facility designed to provide opportunities for small business creation.

·  Kiowa County Commons: At the south end of downtown, the Commons houses the library, historic museum, a community media center and the K-State extension office.

·  Hybrid Dillon’s/ Kwik Shop: Kroger created a unique solution for rebuilding the town’s grocery store by combining their Kwik Shop convenience store with a smaller Dillon’s store.

·  Big Well Museum:  The project design is complete and has been bid.  Construction should be underway soon for this new community landmark.
