Publishers have been preparing for the transition to digital media for years now, and many Roundtable members have successfully launched eBook programs and other digital initiatives. But what about apps? How can a publisher determine the right time to build their first app? What are the questions they need to ask before approaching a software developer? How is the technology changing? How does a publisher set a budget to ensure their app will be a worthwhile investment?

In this wide-ranging discussion, we'll hear from Dan Leary from the Minnesota Historical Society Press, who successfully helped develop the Dad's Eye View app (in conjunction with the publication of the Dad's Eye View guide to the Twin Cities) and is working on a number of additional apps for the press. Don Leeper from BookMobile will talk about the process of developing apps for publisher clients. And Mike Tuminelly from Mighty Media will address some of the questions that publishers should think about as they begin planning for their own app development. Please join us for a look at book apps from multiple perspectives.

Daniel Leary is head of design and production for the Minnesota Historical Society Press, a non-profit educational and cultural institution that collects, preserves and tells the story of Minnesota's past through museum exhibits, libraries and collections, historic sites, educational programs and book publishing. http://www.mnhs.org/index.htm

Don Leeper is president of BookMobile, and has been involved in book design and production since 1982, when he started Stanton Publication Services, a full-service book design and production house. BookMobile introduced Print On Demand services in December 1996, and has worked with over 1,000 customers, including trade houses, university presses, and independent publishers. http://www.bookmobile.com/

Mike Tuminelly is president of Mighty Media, a print and interactive media firm that produces creative solutions for a variety of clients, including publishers and nonprofit organizations. http://www.mightymedia.com/
