Continuing Education Short Course Offering
Reservoir Characterization: From the Laboratory to the Field
Instructor: Larry W. Lake, Ph.D., University of Texas at Austin
Dates: Wednesday, March 25, 2009, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Location: 707 Seventeenth Street, Suite 3010, Denver, CO 80202 (Corner of 17th and California)
0.8 CEUs (Continuing Education Units) will be awarded by SPE-Americas Office for this 1-day course.
Course Description
This course teaches integrated reservoir characterization from the basics of petrophysics through geostatistics. The emphasis is on flow properties of porosity, permeability, capillary pressure, and relative permeability. The course also discusses the statistics of the spatial distribution of these properties and illustrates the benefits of using these properties.
Course Contents
♦ Single-Phase Petrophysical Porosity, Permeability, and Non-Darcy Effects
♦ Two-Phase Flow: Capillary Pressure, Relative Permeabilities and Trapped Phase Saturations
♦ Heterogeneities and Nonuniformities
♦ Effective Properties: (Pseudo) Porosity
♦ Absolute Permeability: Capillary Pressure, Relative Permeability, Dispersivity, and Fingering Factors
Who Should Attend
This course is intended for engineers with at least a BS degree in petroleum or chemical engineering. All other engineers, mathematicians and physicists with at least a BS degree and some experience in reservoir engineering or numerical simulation can benefit from the course. Geologists with at least a BS degree and some quantitative experience or interest may also benefit.
About the Instructor
Dr. Larry W. Lake is a professor and Interim Chair in the Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. He holds B.S.E and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical Engineering from Arizona State University and Rice University, respectively. Published widely, Dr. Lake is the author or co-author of more than 100 technical papers, four textbooks and the editor of three bound volumes. He has been teaching at UT for 30 years, prior to which he worked for Shell Development Company in Houston, Texas. He was chairman of the department from 1989 to 1997, and again from 2006-2008. He formerly held the Shell Distinguished Chair and the W.A. (Tex) Moncrief, Jr. Centennial Endowed Chair in Petroleum Engineering. He currently holds the W.A. (Monty) Moncrief Centennial Chair in Petroleum Engineering. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), as well as on several of its committees. He has twice been an SPE distinguished lecturer., won the 1996 Anthony F. Lucas Gold Medal of the AIME, the Degoyer Distinguished Service Award in 2002, and was named an SPE Honorary Member in 2006. He was also awarded the 1999-2000 Billy and Claude R. Hocott Distinguished Research Award and The University of Texas and the SPE/DOE Symposium IOR Pioneer Award in 2000. In 2000 he received the SPE Distinguished Service Award, and in 2001, was chosen as a member of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers Dream Team. Dr. Lake is a member of the National Academy of Engineers.
