A Lean Manufacturing Plant Tour

AccuRounds in Avon, Massachusetts

JOIN US IN AN ENGAGING TOUR OF A LEAN MANUFACTURING FACILITY

Presented by Patrick O'Connell of AccuRounds

Organized by the LCI New England CoP R&D Committee

AccuRounds manufactures precision custom cylindrical components. They produce intricate shafts and pins of all types and sizes. Their capabilities incorporate the accurate machining and finish grinding of round mechanical components, ranging from firing pins for military equipment to guide shafts for power generation to medical instruments. They machine a multitude of materials such as stainless steels, titanium, aluminum, plastic and a variety of special alloys and exotics. We can also assist you with design and engineering services, as well as handle sub-assembly operations

AccuRounds utilizes various Lean Manufacturing techniques including Kanban and Kaizen methods. They apply SPC and other process control techniques to assure quality throughout the entire manufacturing cycle. AccuRounds is a Shingo Prize Silver Medal Winner for the Northeast Region. The goal of the North American Shingo Prize is to make manufacturing facilities and other industries more competitive in the global marketplace, illustrating how world-class results can be achieved through the implementation of lean principles and techniques in core manufacturing and other business processes.

We will break into groups of six for the one-hour tour of the AccuRounds plant and learn how they apply lean thinking to their business. We'll meet briefly afterward to discuss how what we observed and learned can be applied to the AEC industry.

A special thanks to CoP Member Nick Masci of Dacon for organizing this opportunity.

LCI New England CoP

The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.

The New England Community of Practice of LCI  provides local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors, and suppliers.  We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a local user group to learn, share, and develop a lean community in New England. As a regional forum for conversations among practitioners, the CoP will help create a new common sense for the AEC industry as LCI continues to build knowledge in design and construction.
