Event Details

Recognized as a male dominated space, the technology & engineering industry is home to record low numbers of women today.  Why is this the case and how can we affect positive change?  On Tuesday September 27th, Girls in Tech Toronto (GIT), sponsored by the Centre for Social Innovation, will be hosting a panel discussion to shed further light on the statistics.  Panelists will look at trends in university enrolment and overall engagement of women in the industry after graduation.

Mary Wells, Chair of Women in Engineering Committee, at the University of Waterloo, will explore the environmental and social barriers, if any, blocking women’s participation in the industry.

Michal (Mic) Berman, COO at FreshBooks & Founder at EmbarkOnIt, will discuss the glass ceiling concept for female executives, and share ideas on mentoring young women in the industry.

Heather Leson, Director Community Engagement at Ushahidi, will hack ideas on how we can engage young women in the field by making technology & engineering more open to them.

Together, the more we understand of the factors affecting this landscape, the better equipped we will be to forge a path that may increase participation of women in the technology & engineering industry.

Girls in Tech is a social network enterprise focused on the engagement, education and empowerment of like-minded, professional, intelligent and influential women in technology. As young women with the capacity to inspire, we made it our personal desire and passion to create and sustain an organization that focuses on the collaboration, promotion, growth and success of women in the technology sector.
