The Growth of the Individual:

A View Through the Empathic Lens

with

Frank Lachmann, PhD

Saturday, September 17, 2011

9:00am – 4:00pm

The Cosmos Club of Washington, DC

2121 Massachusetts Avenue, NW

Washington, DC 20008

The day will focus on the application of concepts related to the organization of experience as derived from infant research and shown to e applicable in understanding therapist-patient interactions.  These principles-ongoing regulation, disruption and repair, and heightened affect states-arise in early development, operate throughout the life span and enter into the clinical interaction. In this presentation, Dr. Lachmann will describe some of the fascinating studies that illustrate these principles and their clinical implications.  The role of expectations met, surpassed or violated in transforming the emotional connection between therapist and patient will be emphasized.

This program includes a panel discussion with Mauricio Cortina, MD and Cheri Marmarosh, PhD, and the clinical case presentation with Candace Detchon, PhD and Dr. Lachmann.   Based on attendance of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Apply findings from infant research concerning how humans organize their experience to therapist-patient interactions.
  • Recognize the role of expectations in the therapeutic interaction and assess the extent to which meeting or violating these expectations has contributed to therapeutic progress or stalemates.
  • Apply contemporary self psychology theory to the presented clinical material.
  • Discuss and analyze the ways they could incorporate into their work empirically demonstrable principles of therapeutic action described by Lachmann.
  • Discuss and analyze the presented clinical material from a contemporary self psychology perspective.

Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis

The Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis (ICP&P) was founded in 1994 by a multidisciplinary group of colleagues.  Our mission is to provide an environment that supports the thoughtful consideration of optimal ways to employ therapeutic modalities of exploratory psychotherapy and psychoanalysis with individuals, couples, groups and families.  In pursuit of this goal, we present numerous educational opportunities to our members and to the surrounding mental health community.  ICP&P offers training in psychotherapy, psychoanalysis and couples therapy for those interested in pursuing self psychology and other contemporary treatment models in depth.  In addition, several half-day programs featuring well-know and innovative leaders in the mental health field are offered throughout the year.  For members only, ICP&P also supports monthly study groups on topics reflecting the interests of its members.

ICP&P’s hallmarks are cooperation, mutual respect, openness to new ideas, and ease of access to leadership.  Our community is lively and diverse, benefiting from the training and creative talents of members with backgrounds in all disciplines in the mental health field.  We welcome to our membership all persons interested in contemporary approaches to mental health issues.
